Alcohol believed to be a factor in deadly boat crash
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - Alcohol was a factor in a boat collision that killed one and injured others Friday evening.
A report released by Florida Fish and Wildlife Saturday says alcohol was involved, although officials said Friday they did not think alcohol was involved. It was unclear who they thought may have been drinking, after all.
Five people were involved in the crash. Philip Stock, who turned 40-years-old just the day before, was killed.
FWC said James Garvey, 54 of Lutz, was driving the Parker east out of Bayboro Harbor. In the boat with Garvey was Lara Sieder, 44 of Tampa, and Chad Angell, 58 of Odessa.
FWC said the Parker was coming out of the slow speed zone, at low speed, entering the channel. That's when the Tidewater, driven by Matthew Mann, 40 of St. Petersburg, came from the south and hit the Parker's starboard quarter. After hitting the Parker, the Tidewater hit the seawall at the US Coast Guard St. Petersburg Station, then spun out of control, hitting another section of the seawall. Stock was a passenger in the Tidewater.
Coast Guard rescue crews provided immediate assistance until St. Petersburg Fire Rescue crews arrived.
They pronounced Phillip Stock dead at the scene. Matthew Mann, who was driving the Tidewater, and Chad Angell, who was a passenger in the Parker, were both injured.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the collision.
