Argument leads to deadly shooting at Tampa mosque, deputies say
TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - A Ramadan dinner and prayer service at a Tampa mosque was marred by a deadly fight between two men attending the events.
The argument lead to a deadly shooting in the parking lot of the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay's mosque, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. An off-duty deputy was wrapping up his security detail at the mosque when gunshots were heard from the parking lot. The deputy found one individual holding a gun while another man was injured after being shot at least two times, officials said.
The suspected shooter was detained. The victim was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he later passed away. Investigators said the shooting was a result of an argument between both men.
Sunday night’s service took place during the holy month of Ramadan, and was well-attended. Deputies said the parking lot was crowded with several hundred people at the mosque, located at 7326 East Sligh Avenue. The service was starting to wind down when shots were fired, deputies said.
Investigators said the victim and suspect knew each other, and both were attending prayer services at the mosque. They said there is no threat to the public and the suspect is cooperating with detectives. No charges have been filed.
