Canadian Mint announces Star Trek currency for 50th anniversary
OTTAWA, Ontario (FOX 13 NEWS) - Trekkies around the world are considering a move to Canada - or maybe just a vacation - after the Royal Canadian Mint announced an extensive run of currency honoring their beloved TV series, Star Trek.
The Royal Canadian Mint revealed Star Trek-themed coins, which it called "a new world of collectibles," honoring the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series.
"The unforgettable characters and imagery of the revolutionary TV show, which has captivated legions of fans in Canada and around the world since 1966, have been captured on a stunning variety of coins devoted to the original series," the agency said in a news release about the coins.
Featured on the money are Captain James Tiberius Kirk - which was played by Canadian-born actor William Shatner - as well as the U.S.S. Enterprise, the Delta Shield insignia, a three-coin series depicting classic scenes from popular episodes of the original Star Trek series, Scotty, Spock, Uhura and many more.
The first coins, featuring Captain Kirk, will be available for purchase beginning May 13, with additional designs being released through the summer. For more information about the collection, visit www.mint.ca.
