More than 70 people in 31 states have fallen ill with salmonella as a result of eating Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal, according to the FDA and CDC.

Yesterday, the Kellogg Company announced a voluntary recall of its Honey Smacks cereal, in both 15 and 23-ounce boxes with certain "best if used by" dates.

Today, the FDA says it is launching an investigation into a salmonella outbreak likely due to the cereal. The agency says to throw away any Honey Smacks cereal of any size and with any "best if used by date."

The CDC reports that 73 people in 31 states have become ill. There have been 24 hospitalizations and no deaths.

People who think they might have symptoms of a salmonella infection should consult their healthcare provider.
