Polk deputies look for suspect in shooting that killed disabled teen

LAKELAND (FOX 13) - Polk County officials released more details about the investigation into a shooting Monday that killed one teen and injured two others. 

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says the one person who died in the shooting, a 17-year-old in a wheelchair, may not have been the intended target of the gunfire.

Investigators say the suspected gunman apparently targeted three men in a white Cadillac on Tennessee Road in the Wabash area of unincorporated Lakeland. Witnesses said the white Cadillac drove past a house on Tennessee Road, turned around, and slowly came back to the residence.

Deputies say that's when 29-year-old John Lugo, of Lakeland, fired shots at the Cadillac. The gunshots hit the driver, 18-year-old Dario Trejo, of Lakeland, and the front passenger, 24-year-old Jose Tinoco, of Lakeland.

The back seat passenger, 18-year-old Christopher Garcia, of Lakeland, was not injured.

Witnesses also told investigators they believed shots were fired from outside the home and from passengers inside the Cadillac, which veered into a ditch a short distance from the Tennessee Road home.  

At that home was 17-year-old Jake Andrew Castillo, who was in a wheelchair as a result of being shot during a gang-related incident in 2011. 

After Monday's apparent gang-related shooting, responding deputies found Castillo with a gunshot wound to the torso. He died as a result of the injury.

Deputies also found Trejo and Tinoco with gunshot wounds. Trejo was shot in the torso and was treated and released. Tinoco was shot in the lower left jaw and is in stable condition.  

After the shooting, deputies say Lugo fled the scene. PCSO has issued an arrest warrant for Lugo for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Detectives are trying to locate him.

Trejo, meanwhile, has been arrested and charged with seven felony counts of possession of Xanax, felony tampering with evidence, and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Polk County Jai and is being held on no bond.
