Richmond police officer's rendition of gospel song goes viral
RICHMOND, Va. - A Richmond Police Department officer gained online traction after posting a video of himself singing Marvin Sapp’s award-winning gospel song The Best in Me on March 4.
The police department shared this footage on Thursday, March 5, of Officer Mervin Mayo’s passionate performance a day after he posted it on his personal Facebook page. Mayo’s video had garnered more than 14,000 shares and more than 7,000 likes on his Facebook page as of Thursday morning.
The police department said Mayo has “always been inspired” by the song, prompting him to sing it at his church, Truth Ministries, in Richmond, Virginia. Mayo, who has been with the police department since 2005, also serves as the minister of music at Truth Ministries.
“I sing in or out of uniform at the drop of a dime,” Mayo said.
Mayo works as a school resource officer for Richmond Alternative School and is a referee and mentor for the department’s Police Athletic League program, where he has sung at events, according to the department.
The Marvin Sapp song won the 2010 Soul Train Music Award for Best Gospel/Inspirational Song.
