Watch: Ducks swim through green sludge on Caloosahatchee River

FORT MYERS, Fla. (FOX 13) - A Fort Myers resident recorded video of ducks swimming through water appearing to be covered in blue-green algae on the Caloosahatchee River.

In a video posted on Facebook August 22, by Courtney Micale, the ducks cut through the green substance, leaving visible trails behind them. 

Micale also posted photos of the green scum covering the water.

According to its website, Lee County is being struck by two different algal bloom events – red tide in the gulf and blue-green algae in the river and canals of the Caloosahatchee River.

The Florida Department of Health says blooms of blue-green algae, cyanobacterial, look like foam, pond scum, or mats on the surface of freshwater lakes and ponds.

DOH-Florida says coming into contact with this kind of algae can cause a rash in humans.
