A 93-year-old World War II veteran dyed his hair red, white and blue ahead of an honor flight this weekend.

“I’ve been doing this all my life,” said Pete Bitzer, who lives in DeBary.

This time, his head has been transformed into a patriotic tribute. On Saturday, he’ll leave Florida to visit the nation’s capital with other man and women who have served this country.

“Not too many of us World War II veterans left. Very few,” he said.

Tammy Lovell is the one who got his hair ready for the trip. She says she’s taken many requests from Bitzer, who was friends with her dad, for different hair colors.

“He loves attention, he just loves it,” Lovell said. “We did red and green for Christmas, we did green for St. Patrick’s Day. This past Easter, he wanted very bright orange.”

“I have seven pairs of dancing shoes all different colors that usually match my hair,” Bitzer said.

Bitzer says he likes to show off the different colors when he goes dancing at the VFW every Friday. He’s sure to turn heads in DC too with his new locks.

“I love to be in the spotlight,” Bitzer said.

The veteran will be showing off his pride for his country everywhere he goes.

“Look out Washington – he’s coming to visit,” Lovell said.

The honor flight leaves from OIA Saturday morning.
