Chris Godwin makes name as Bucs playmaker

TAMPA (FOX 13) - Buccaneers Head Coach Dirk Koetter doesn't like to single out players, but second-year wide-receiver Chris Godwin's performance this offseason can't go unnoticed.

“I know you guys couldn't be out here every single day but if you were out here every day, you would have noticed Chris as one of the guys that, every day, made some kind of highlight play, on top of being very consistent," Koetter said.

Godwin is building on an outstanding rookie season. His 15.4 yards-per-catch average ranked him second among all players drafted ahead of him.

His average per-catch was seventh best among all NFL receivers.

Desean Jackson saw Godwin's potential early and is impressed.

“Since last year, Chris came in and was making plays," said Jackson. "He’s a big, physical receiver. He can get open and create space. This is year-two for him. He’s probably a little more confident. I’ve liked him since last year, too. He’s a good addition to have with me, [Adam Humphries] and Mike [Evans]. I think he’ll be able to make a big impact, as well, this year.”

Standing out among receivers isn't easy with names like Evans, Jackson, and Brate, but Godwin is quickly making his name known.

His tireless work ethic is the reason for his success.

"I'm always trying to get better," said Godwin. "I try to be as self-aware as I can. Try to realize where my flaws are and try to make those into my strength. Like you said, you saw me at APSI [training center in Tampa] with [former Buc Anthony] Reidel. I got some work in with him and there is a bunch of other guys I worked with. I just try to learn as much information as I can to put it all together for when the season comes."

Godwin knows what it's like being a rookie and he's already taking steps to help the next young receiver in line, mentoring fifth-round pick Justin Watson. 

"His locker is next to mine," said Godwin. "I try to help him out whenever I can because I understand what it's like to be a rookie. I see him like a younger brother. We go out there and I try to help him as much as I can."
