1.3 million bikes from 17 brands recalled for crash hazard

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Nearly 1.3 million bicycles in the United States are being recalled for a defect that could cause riders to crash. The recall affects 17 different bike brands from 13 companies, with bikes ranging from model years 1998 through 2015, and a price range of $200 to $10,000.

The recalled bikes have a quick release lever on the bicycles front wheel which can come into contact with the front disc brake rotor, causing the wheel to stop suddenly or separate from the bike altogether, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

One man reportedly broke his finger and injured his wrist and shoulder as a result of the defect. Two other incidents have been reported, however, neither resulted in any injuries.

Bloomington-based Quality Bicycle Products is among the 13 recalling companies. Others include Diamondback, Raleigh, Fuji and Giant. The companies are offering free installation of a new quick release level on the front wheel for anyone with an affected bike.
