Deputy airlifted to hospital after severe crash
BROOKSVILLE (FOX 13) - A Sumter County corrections deputy has been airlifted to a local hospital after a severe crash early Tuesday morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol says it happened on Cortez Boulevard at Lockhart Road just after 5:15 a.m.
The deputy, identified so far only as a 31-year-old man, was said to be in his personal vehicle, a 2007 Toyota, and possibly on his way to work at the time.
Crash investigators say he was heading east on State Road 50 when he entered the center median, overcorrected and ended up overturning his vehicle until it landed in the westbound lanes.
Troopers say the deputy was not wearing his seatbelt, and ended up being ejected from the vehicle.
At last check, he was said to be in critical condition.
FOX 13 will continue with updates as they become available.
