Extraordinary Ordinaries: He keeps the bikes rolling

TAMPA (FOX 13) - Some parts in and around downtown Tampa are seeing a splash of blue. Coast Bike Share has been in existence now for about a year, and so far, the response has far exceeded expectations.

"We've had, in our 11 months in existence, 15,000 riders and they have racked up 120,000 miles all together," Joe Freeman told FOX 13 News.

Riders have to set up a profile on their downloadable app or on their website and then they are able to ride the bikes at a cost depending on renting for the day or hour.

Since riders typically take the wheels for a one-way spin, Coast needs a "behind the scenes guy" to take care and maintain these visible modes of transportation. The company was also able to find a guy who loves the bikes even more than the owners do.

"There is no other way to describe it and it's hard to explain, but just the freedom it allows you. Suddenly everything is an adventure. All you're worried about is the road in front of you. When you get on a bike, you can take off in this direction or that direction and it's just that much more fun and exciting," Freeman said.

He's been riding since he was 4 years old and racked up an estimated one million miles and says since he gets paid to maintain bikes while loving cycling at the same time, it's not work!

"I'm a cyclist," he continued.  "I've been riding for quite some time and I commute every day to work on my bike. And on my days off, I'm mostly riding.  So for me it's a passion. It's euphoric, pedaling a bike to me is euphoric."
