Massive fire reported at Miami flea market, near Miami International Airport

First responders in Miami were fighting a massive three-alarm fire at a flea market just before 5 p.m. on Thursday. Authorities said a tent at the market was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived at the scene, not far from Miami International Airport.

WSVN, the FOX affiliate in Miami, reported that the fire was burning on Northwest 37th Street and 30th Avenue, close to the east end of the airport.  The fire spread to multiple tents in the market and to a one-story warehouse that houses animals.

"Unfortunately, as a result of the fire, many animals in the warehouse were deceased, but firefighters were able to rescue some from the fire," said a spokesperson with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Video from WSVN's helicopter showed multiple ladder trucks and firefighters spraying water on several buildings that were on fire, as huge plumes of dark smoke hovered above. Over 40 units were on scene as firefighters worked to control the fire which was still burning at around 9 p.m.

One patient suffered traumatic injuries and was transported by ground to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

It was not immediately known what caused the fire, when it started, or what was specifically burning at the flea market. It was also not clear if the incident was impacting flights at Miami International Airport. FOX 35 has reached out to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue for information.
