Una Voce Men's Gay Chorale unites community in song

TAMPA (FOX 13) - The attack at Pulse nightclub in Orlando adds extra meaning to a Tampa group's mission to unite our community.

One voice rising in song can help change the world and Una Voce Men's Gay Chorale of Tampa Bay is makes that change its mission.

"[There’s] something really amazing about coming together, creating that sound that you can't create on your own," the group’s artistic director, Joseph Caulkins explained.

The 40-strong, all-male group is 14 years old. Its message of dignity and self-worth is expressed in music.

"When men get together, there's a real deep, robust, dynamic sound that’s just hard not to love, because it’s very strong. It’s powerful, but… it has a lot of tenderness and beauty to it," Caulkins described.

Harold Harkins, 67, began singing with the group after hearing them perform.

"I went to hear the chorus sing and the only thing that I didn't like about it was that I wasn't on the stage," Harold said.

Joseph believes the group's sense of brotherhood creates a strong bond.

"For me, it’s that synergy of that sound, and the communication that we have with each other, that really is meaningful to me," Caulkins said.

The chorus is performing at the Gala Festival in Denver next month.
