Tropical Storm Beryl likely to become hurricane by Sunday

According to FOX 13 Meteorologist Valerie Mills, Tropical Storm Beryl is getting a little bit more organized. Mills says sustained winds are at 60 mph but once they reach 74 mph Beryl will be officially classified as a category one hurricane.

Tropical disturbance likely to develop this weekend

FOX 13 Meteorologist Nash Rhodes takes a look at three active tropical disturbances, highlighting Invest 95L, which has a high chance of development over the weekend and could become Tropical Storm Beryl. Also, Invest 94L is moving through the Caribbean and a new tropical wave formed in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa.

Tropical wave in Atlantic could become depression

FOX 13 Meteorologist Nash Rhodes gave an update on two tropical waves - one in the Atlantic and one in the Caribbean. One spinning towards the Gulf of Mexico could become a tropical depression but won't pose much of an issue for the U.S. The second wave, still quite far away from the U.S. and Florida, is expected to form over the weekend and could become the second named storm of the season.

2 tropical waves show small signs of development

FOX 13 Meteorologist Nash Rhodes is tracking two tropical waves. One is in the Central Caribbean that has a slight chance of developing over the next week as it travels west toward Mexico. The second tropical wave is more than 3,000 miles from Florida and is making its way across the Atlantic. He said it has a 30% chance of developing over the next seven days. However, a layer of Saharan dust making its way off the coast of Africa is keeping things dry and making it difficult for tropical systems to develop.

Saharan dust may reach Florida this weekend

FOX 13 Meteorologist Valerie Mills is tracking the first round of Saharan dust making its way off the coast of Africa. She says as the dust moves west toward Florida, it will squash any tropical waves that try to develop. That’s because the Saharan dust is 50 percent drier than a typical moist air mass that meteorologists would typically see this time of year. She says some of the Saharan air will make its way to the coast of Florida this weekend, which may reduce the air quality. Mills noted that there is one wave on the edge of the Saharan air that has a low chance of development at the moment. However, it may develop more tropical characteristics as it moves west toward Mexico.

Saharan dust keeps tropics quiet

FOX 13 Meteorologist Valerie Mills is keeping an eye on the tropics, which are quiet at the moment. She says there is quiet a bit of Saharan dust moving off the coast of Africa and into the Atlantic and that will limit any waves that may try to develop because they would have to contend with the drier air. Mills says she does not expect anything to develop in the tropics over the next week.

Invest 93L continues to spin in Gulf

FOX 13 Meteorologist Valerie Mills says Invest 93L is currently the only system being tracked in the tropics. According to Mills, it has a 40% chance of becoming a tropical low in the next two to seven days.

System could develop in Gulf of Mexico

FOX 13 Meteorologist Valerie Mills says a system spinning off the east coast of Florida will bring some rain and tropical moisture to the state but probably will not form into anything tropical over the next week. Mills says a little system in the Gulf of Mexico has a decent chance of development.
