Flooding causes damage in Lakeland neighborhood
LAKELAND (FOX 13) - Several feet of floodwater led to damaged homes and cars Sunday in the Crystal Lakes section of Lakeland.
According to the Lakeland Fire Department several streets were flooded and cars stalled out in the water. The heavy rains came through on Saturday, but the cleanup lasted through the weekend.
The roof of Jay's Mini Mart on Main Street in Lakeland collapsed because of Saturday night's rains. No one was hurt, but a photo of what the store looked like before and after showed the extent of the destruction of the store.
Residents on Cresap Street had water just inches from their doors.
"We stayed home because we were scared our house was going to flood," said Brittany Francisco.
Francisco said the water went under her house causing the wood to rot and the floor to collapse in places.
"The inside of my house, the floor is just rotting away," said Francisco.
Neighbors hoped more rain didn't create a repeat of the flooding Saturday.
"Hopefully we can keep the water from coming in our house our floors don't fall through in the meantime," said Francisco.
Another neighbor showed FOX13 a car with an engine that died after water flooded the motor.
Fire officials said several homeowners were offered help from the American Red Cross.
