Four hospitalized after Leto High gas leak
TAMPA (FOX 13) - Students and staff at Leto High School are being moved from school buildings after gas from the science lab apparently filled the school.
The odor of gas led to the decision to evacuate the school buildings not long after classes started this morning. Firefighters later said the source appeared to be from the school's science lab.
The district said gas nozzles were apparently open, so when the main gas valve was opened for the day, gas flowed into the classroom.
Administrators say they are treating the incident as an accident, assuming the students opened the nozzles to prepare for class.
Gas to the entire campus has since been shut off.
The school will be closed for the rest of the day and students will be bussed to Pierce Middle School for classes. Some were being allowed to head home with parental permission.
Two staff members and two students were taken to the hospital to be checked out, Hillsborough Fire Rescue said. their injuries and conditions were not immediately available.
