Mother delivers her own baby on the side of the road in North Phoenix
A baby boy born early Wednesday morning will have quite the story to tell when he gets a little older.
Sebastian's mother, Shannon Geise, was on the way to the hospital, driving an SUV, when Sebastian decided he couldn't wait to arrive to this world.
Sebestian is Geise's fifth child. When Geise's water broke around midnight, she figured she would have a few hours before the contractions kick in. Geise took a shower, and even started packing a bag, but the contractions came a lot sooner and harder than she had anticipated.
At 1:23 a.m. Wednesday, Sebastian came into the world, on the side of the road near 32nd Street and Union Hills, and in the driver's seat of his family's SUV. Geise was about five minutes away from the hospital.
"I had to pull over because I had a contraction that would not stop," said Geise. "I was involuntarily, basically, pushing. The first time my body just pushed, I felt him go down. The next time, his head came out, and then I pushed two more times, and his shoulders and everything came out, and I was kind of just in shock. This is not happening to me. This is not happening."
It took only about a minute for Geise to deliver Sebastian, with Geise's 17-month-old daughter in the backseat, watching TV while Sebastian came to this world. After Geise rubbed Sebastian's back and heard his first cry, Shannon called 911.
"They're like, 'Do you need an ambulance? Are you going to keep going?'" recounted Geise. "Honestly, it would be quicker for me just to go."
Geise drove the rest of the way herself.
"It started from, 'Am I going to make it in time to get an epidural', then it was like, 'Am I going to make it to the hospital', then it was like, 'I just need to make it there because he was already out'," said Geise.
Sebastian was 39 weeks, born without complication, and weights 6 lbs, 7 oz. Meanwhile, Geise and her newborn are happy and healthy, and they are expecting to drive themselves home from the hospital on Thursday, after a mobile detailer cleans the family car.
