Sarasota police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting
SARASOTA, Fla. - Two people are dead and a Sarasota police officer is on administrative leave after an officer-involved shooting Saturday night.
It happened in the 2400 block of Bay Street around 6:30 p.m.
According to police, the officer was responding to a 911 call of shots fired. Witnesses say they heard a woman screaming and heard gunshots.
When the officer arrived, he encountered an adult male who was armed with a gun, according to the Sarasota Police Department.
Police Chief Jim Rieser says preliminary information suggests that the man killed a woman in front of the officer. He says that the officer fired his weapon and the suspect is dead, but it is unclear if the officer killed the man or if the man killed himself.
Rieser said that the investigation is very active and more details will be released at a later time.
Per SPD policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
