Deaf students get hands-on at Blossom Montessori

CLEARWATER (FOX 13) - Conventional education methods can be a challenge for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, but thankfully for students at a school in Clearwater, learning is designed just for them.

The Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf combines sign language with hands-on learning.

Julie Rutenberg founded the school back in 2003 after working with deaf children and their families for several years. She saw a need to educate them in a different way.

"We're just a different alternative. We're a Montessori environment so our kids get to learn with visual materials at their own pace and we can cater the curriculum towards them.", said Rutenberg.

Blossom is one of only two schools in the nation to use Montessori methods to teach children with hearing challenges.
