Deputy-involved shooting leaves 1 dead in Polk County
LAKE WALES (FOX 13) - New information is coming out about a gunfight between a Winter Haven and two Polk County deputies.
Quinton Case died during the encounter. He was 34-years-old.
"He intended to have a gunfight and we gave him a gunfight," said Polk Sheriff Grady Judd.
Case was riding his motorcycle more than 100 miles an hour on a rural road in the Lake Wales area around 6:30 Monday night.
Deputy Clinton Wofford, who was working traffic, followed Case to a desolate road, where investigators say Case pulled out a gun and fired. Wofford fired back and apparently hit case. Wounded and dazed, Case took off.
When Wofford found Case, he pulled a rifle out of his cruiser.
"And the reason for that," comment Judd, " is the deputy is about out of ammunition. He has shot 42 times with his handgun."
Minutes later, a second deputy, Clayton Cougyt, shows up as back up and starts firing as well.
"He still after he is shot up, sitting on the ground, he pulls up that gun one last time and that's the very last thing he did," said Judd.
Case had two outstanding warrant when he died and a long criminal record. He was first arrested when he was 19 years-old.
