Pokémon Go craze sweeps Tampa Bay

TAMPA (FOX 13) - The latest craze sweeping the nation is called Pokémon Go and it has people glued to their smartphones.

"There's like zombies of people playing and people laughing," said Pokemon fan, Yuna Whiteside. 

Dozens of teens and adults were hunting for Pokemon characters at Largo Central Park.

"People are out here enjoying it going out in nature looking at things seeing things they wouldn't see before," Maerosa Whiteside said.

The game uses your phone's GPS and clock to figure out where you are.  As you move around Pokemon characters will pop up for you to catch.  The real world game combo is known as augmented reality.

Police want you to be careful though, they're warning about playing and driving and knowing your surroundings.  The game has reportedly been used to lure robbery victims.

"When you're going to these different place look around if you're going to go out go with friends don't go to remote places," said Largo Police Lt. Paul Amodeo.

But most of all as the kids will tell you, just have fun and catch them all.

"It is hilarious that Pokémon Go has not only gotten kids out and exercise but bonded a whole group together," said Rob Allen, a Pokémon fan since he was 6 years old.
