The search for a suspected beer thief in England has gone viral after the suspect bears a strong resemblance to a former television sitcom star.

Blackpool police posted on its Facebook page an image of a man wanted in the theft from a restaurant last Saturday as they are seeking help from the public to identify him.

However, the post caused a huge response as it was shared more than 41,000 times and generated more than 67,000 comments on the post as many people noticed that the suspect appears to look like actor David Schwimmer, who is best known for his role of Ross Geller in the television show, “Friends.”

However, the police department has confirmed that the suspect is in fact not Schwimmer.

“Thank you to everyone for your speedy responses,” the police department commented on its Facebook post. “We have investigated this matter thoroughly and have confirmed that David Schwimmer was in America on this date. We're so sorry it has to be this way.”

After social media's reaction to the post, actor David Schwimmer responded with a hilarious tweet of the beer thief, it read:

"Officers, I swear it wasn't me. As you can see, I was in New York. To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation.#itwasntme"
