FDOT accelerates I-4 plan to ease congestion between Disney World, ChampionsGate
ORLANDO, Fla. - One of the most congested stretches of highway in the U.S., I-4 near ChampionsGate, is undergoing a fast-tracked expansion to tackle Central Florida’s growing traffic demands.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced plans to add two new congestion relief lanes in each direction, spanning over seven miles from U.S. 27 in Polk County to east of World Center Drive in Orange County. The project, initially set for completion in 10 years, is now expected to finish by late 2025.

The accelerated start is part of the larger Moving I-4 Forward Program which consists of five main projects:
- Project 1 will focus improvements on I-4 from east of World Drive to east of U.S. 192
- Project 2 will add improvements to I-4 from east of County Road 532 to west of World Drive and State Road 429 interchange
- Project 3 will improve I-4 west of U.S. 27 to west of Ronald Reagan Parkway
- Project 4 will improve I-4 from west of Osceola Parkway to east of State Road 536
- Project 5 will extend Poinciana Parkway from County Road 532 to the I-4/State Road 429 interchange
The Moving I-4 Forward Program compliments the I-4 Beyond the Ultimate project, which includes new improvements at Sand Lake Road, the Beachline Expressway (SR 528), Daryl Carter Parkway, and Apopoka-Vineland Road (SR 535), as well as the extension of the I-4 Express lanes from Kirkman Road to just west of Epcot Center Drive/World Center Drive (SR 536). The I-4 Beyond the Ultimate project is expected to be completed by 2027.
